Samantha Who? may not have made it past a sophomore season, but already former star Melissa McCarthy has lined up a new comedy-TV gig.
Entertainment Weekly scoops that the Gilmore Girls alumna is next set to appear in another ABC sitcom, the new Kelsey Grammer series Hank.
After describing the upcoming show as “painfully unfunny” (I wouldn’t know personally since I haven’t watched any clips yet), EW reports that McCarthy will have a recurring role portraying a character named Dawn, who just happens to be the sister-in-law of Grammer’s title character via marriage to his brother Grady (The Office’s David Koechner).
Unfunny or not, I’m glad McCarthy will still be around on the small screen next season. Maybe her presence will give the sitcom a much-needed boost if it does actually have problems in the laughs department.
SAMANTHA WHO? is the winning “amnesia” comedy, where Christina Applegate has lost her memory and tries to find out who she was. She eventually realizes that she was not as nice as she would have liked to have been.
With a fine supporting cast, including the scene stealing (and Emmy winning) Jean Smart as her mother, Kevin Dunn as her father, Melissa McCarthy (THE GILMORE GIRLS) and Jennifer Esposito as her friends, Barry Watson as a former boyfriend and Tim Russ as Frank the doorman, this was one of the funnier shows of recent years.
When SAMANTHA WHO went on the air in October of 2007, it was a huge surprise. Christina Applegate was a comic revelation, proving that she was much more than her Kelly Bundy character. She was nominated (and should have won) an Emmy for the role. She is again nominated for this second season.
In this second season, it began well. Airing after DANCING WITH THE STARS, the ratings were still quite good. But, as happens so often with TV, its time slot was moved. It aired on Thursday night, opposite the NBC comedies. The ratings fell.
The network lost faith in the show and it was not renewed. The final episodes of the season were dumped in the summer months of June and July of this year. As much as I liked the show, and stayed with it during the time changes, I was not even aware it was still being shown and missed these final episodes. I thought the finale had aired in April.
But, while the show may be gone, the entire second season, along with those final episodes, that many may have missed, are now on DVD.

After two seasons, ABC comedy Samantha Who? bids farewell to its few but dedicated fans as it airs back-to-back episodes in its series finale tonight 8:30pm on ABC.
On “The Other Woman,” Samantha (Christina Applegate) starts to vaguely remember something about her and billionaire Winston Funk’s (Billy Zane) ex wife Gigi before the accident, and that she might have played an important role in her life.
Elsewhere, a wedding seems to be in the offing as Chapman asks Dena (Melissa McCarthy) to marry him, but she’s slightly reluctant on the proposal. Finally, Andrea (Jennifer Esposito) tries to seduce gay pro-basketball player Tony Dane (McKinley Freeman) into bed, while Regina (Jean Smart) is caught in a love triangle as to prepare to leave on vacation with Howard.
On “With this Ring,” meanwhile, Sam finds herself at a crossroads and has to choose between Winston Funk or Todd (Barry Watson). All these, on Andrea’s wedding day to Tony Dane. For their part, Regina and Howard begins to discover that their lives are beginning to take separate paths.
On the last episode of Samantha Who? Samantha tried to find balance between her new job and Todd, while Andrea was shadowed by a camera crew for a new reality show on celebrity weddings.
In a sort of consolation, Applegate recently received her second consecutive Emmy nod for her role as Samantha. Her last Emmy win was in 2003 when she guest-starred on Friends.
Samantha Who? was picked up for a second season in early February last year, with an order for additional seven episodes. Following a slump in the ratings, after an 11 mil average in the first season, ABC announced that it’s canceling Samantha Who? in May this year. Moves were made to present the comedy to other networks but a pick-up is highly unlikely, at least at this point.
As canceled Samantha Who? returns tonight with “The Rock Star,” Sam (Christina Applegate) alienates her best friends Andrea (Jennifer Esposito) and Dena (Melissa McCarthy) after she begins dating a rock superstar (Duran Duran’s John Taylor). But who can blame her? He had been her idol while growing up although she has absolutely no recollection of her former feelings about him. Eventually, she discovers that she might have bitten more than she can chew as the rock star turns out to be “hungry like the wolf.”
Last we left the ABC comedy, Sam was running into financial trouble at the craps table in Vegas with her – yes – parents. When things got tough, it seemed as if her old boss Winston Funk could be just the person she needed to help her out of the jam. Meanwhile, Dena was able to pull a fast one on Andrea after she reluctantly agreed to help improve Andrea’s image in the media.
After two seasons, ABC canceled Samantha Who? mid-May this year, with the final seven episodes scheduled to start airing tonight. The alphabet network cited dwindling ratings for the comedy as the reason for the axing, with its impressive 14.92 mil debut numbers down to as low as 9.87 mil later in the season, and further plunging to 4.96 mil on the last episode in April.
While there is a chance that the show will be picked up by other networks, critics say the chances of such a thing happening is highly unlikely. Applegate has started an online petition to bring the show back on air. As of last count, she has gathered a little over 30,000 signatures so far.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announces today that Samantha Who? – The Complete 2nd Seasonis coming to DVD on August 25th, at a suggest list price of $39.99 in the USA and CA$44.99 SRP in Canada. Package art and other details weren’t provided in the first wave of information about this, but stay tuned and we’ll update you whenever the studio provides us with more!
UPDATE: The second wave of information has already rolled in, and now we know that this 3-DVD set with 17 episodes (running approximately 460 minutes) will include Deleted Scenes, Bloopers, a Set Tour with Christina Applegate, and a “Christina Dance Moment” as well.
Download Samantha Who? First two Season’s DVD
Despite indications last week that Samantha Who? would return for a third season, it now looks like the series has been cancelled. 
ABC was planning to renew the series, which was yanked prior to all of Season airing, with a reduced budget of $500,000 per episode (achieved by filming with multiple cameras to speed up production).
However, because the network has 10 new series planned for the Fall, 4 of which are comedies, that left Samantha Who? with no ideal timeslot. The network typically heavily promotes it’s biggest and/or newest shows, leaving Samantha Who? with no promotion as well. The lack of good time slot (what dropped the ratings in the series to begin with) and promotion would likely not help the series any. The network and studio therefore decided to cancel the series.
It seems there’s a growing trend at these big tv networks to put their budgets behind creating lots of new shows and heavily promoting them. It’s rare now to see a series get picked up for a second season, let alone a third. As many of the “heavy hitter” series’ can’t last forever, this pattern may someday soon spell for trouble.
There is no indication if the remainder of Season 2 will be aired. So sad. I quite enjoyed this series.

2.11 “The Dog”

Sam (Christina Applegate) wants a baby, but she settles for a babysitting one of Dena’s (Melissa McCarthy) dogs to see if you has any motherly instincts. Howard (Kevin Dunn) and Regina (Jean Smart) inherit a plane, which causes Regina to take flying lessons.
Samantha Who? Highlights:
* Samantha doesn’t have a green thumb – her plants “are teenagers”, rejecting her love
* Uncle Walter has died – Sam’s Uncle Walter. Who she doesn’t remember. Thankfully Sam has a cute black dress to wear… 
* At the open-casket funeral, Sam can’t muster up any tears.
* Regina gets all teary about the “shortness of life” and the lack of any grandchildren from Sam, and Sam getting older.
* Sam gets a baby put into her arms by a relative, the baby smell sending her into tears. “I want a baby!”
* Walter left Regina & Howard a plane in his will – Howard thinks he’s taunting his wealth at them. Regina decides to take flying lessons!
* Dena has adopted a new dog – a much smaller dog that Mr. Cellophane seems to want to eat.
* Sam is looking into adopting a baby, but finds the process laborious. Dena gives her an egg to tend, to see if she’s ready for responsibility… Sam drops it.
* There’s a photo of Andrea (Jennifer Esposito) in a gossip magazine with “baby bump” written on it, referencing “Tony Dane’s Love Child“, despite their fake relationship.
* “That’s not a baby, it’s a bagel! That’s what I get for eating breakfast. One time in twenty years!” – Andrea
* Sam picks up the new puppy and smells it, falling in love. She brings “baby’ home to the apartment, where he proceeds to jump all over Todd’s (Barry Watson) work
* Todd doesn’t want a dog, and somehow knowing this, Baby proceeds to destroy his shoe
* Sam discovers that Baby’s sleep pattern is not the same as hers. It’s morning just as she’s falling asleep.
* Regina calls, Sam having overslept and missed a house showing. Regina has called from inside the cockpit of her plane, about to get her first lesson. Though the liability waiver freaks her out.
* Baby has also eaten Sam’s Jimmy Choo’s. Ouch, expensive. Just a minute later, Sam goes back to retrieve her cell phone and Baby has destroyed the livingroom! Sam has to take him with her.
* Sam’s favorite coffee place doesn’t allow dogs inside, so Baby barks like crazy. Frank (Tim Russ) is there, so Sam vents about her horrible doggy experience. Frank tells her just to keep track of Baby – just keeping him safe is good parenting
* Of course, they return outside and Baby is missing.
* Andrea is continuing to pretend she’s pregnant because stores are sending her cool purses (ahem, diaper bags). Though the bar knowing she’s “pregnant” means no alcohol. Pregnancy farce over.
* Sam drew pictures of the dog, but it looks like a horse, for posters. Dena stops by to see the dog, but Sam tries to slam the door in her face.
* Dena wants to see the dog, but Sam tries to pretend he’s sleeping, then that he ran into a closet. Dena spots the lie, but Sam covers it. It was all good until Todd walks in with Baby, after finding him outside.
* Frank had to come get Regina from the plane – she’s too afraid to fly it. But doesn’t want to sell it and the freedom it represents. “I wanted us to be the Newly’s who have adventures.”
* Frank suggests instead that they sell the plane and go on a trip to Bora Bora.
* Dena forgives Sam for losing Baby – Todd had found him drooling over a shoe store. Sam says she felt like part of her was missing when Baby was missing
* Sam decides to give Baby away, not ready to think and worry that much about something. She finds herself enough to handle. Todd seems hurt, I guess having the dog grow on him
* Sam flashes on a memory of Todd having a book of baby names after Sam had said she may be pregnant. She wasn’t but didn’t tell him. Sam also discovers a teddy bear, that he’d been excited for a baby.
* Sam goes to Todd to apologize for not involving him in the decision. Todd says he can’t play house with her. “It’s hard enough living here remembering we’re not together. And then you bring in something to care about and expect us to act like a family and I have to remember we’re not that either.”
* Considering Sam wanted to approach Todd about his feelings last episode, why does she avoid them now?! Arg!
* Sam says she’s not ready for a baby. Todd says “yet.” And later helps her nurture her newly bought plants.
